5 tips for your next winter escape in the Dunsborough region

With our local towns needing help to regrow after lockdown and borders still closed, now is the perfect time to head off on a micro adventure weekend and rediscover our own backyard.

With this in mind, I finally had a weekend free that I could head down to the South West, visit my Grandma in Busselton and then rediscover the region. It is amazing once you haven’t been to a place for a while, you suddenly appreciate the little things. The sun was shining, the ocean was sparkly and you could smell the forest.

We spent a lot of time in Busselton growing up and I remember Grandad would ride with us for miles and then treat us to ice cream. Grandma would take out to the Busselton Foreshore or we would head to Meelup for a Picnic. In this trip, it was time to rediscover some of the magic memories of this area. So here are my five places to visit in Winter.

1. Busselton Jetty

It is so iconic to Busselton, yet we often just walk past it and enjoy the beach. When was the last time you actually enjoyed it like a tourist? You can feel the breeze in your hair, enjoy the walk to the end, let the ocean take your stresses away and watch the yachts sail past. We were even lucky enough to see some dolphins. Make sure you take a jacket though; it can get chilly and windy near the end.

2. Meelup Beach

We loved this beach when we grew up. It is nice and protected to swim in and a great picnic area. I encourage you to come here still in Winter. Bring your kids here to practice their surfing or bring a picnic. Be a big kid again and climb over rocks, soak up the sun or why not walk along the Meelup Reserve Trail.

3. Meelup Farmhouse and Wines Wines

If you love the idea of indulging and relaxing with friends amongst the trees, it is time you checked out these guys. Try Western Australia’s only Pisco. Alternatively, check out the little chicks running wild over at Meelup Farmhouse, relax on the grass and enjoy their chilled-out café.

4. Riding through Margaret River

The bikes might not have fit on the car this trip but we did walk part of the track along the river the central part of Margaret River. It is beautiful too. And there is a network of tracks to choose from. I can’t wait to bring my bike down next time I am down here. I would recommend going into the Hairy Marron who are really helpful on all the information you need on finding the tracks or alternative head to Trailfolks app.

5. Cape to Cape or go fo a hike

You don’t have to do the whole lot at one piece, but why not run or walk parts of it. We walked on the part near The White Elephant Cafe so we could soak up the ocean and enjoy a coffee. Want something different to the Cape to Cape, have a look at Trails WA website for ideas. There is lots to choose from in the region.

Have fun on your winter break.
